2018 Trends in Cold Storage and Retail

01/06/2019

USDA data comparing the volume of total chicken and selected categories in November 2017 and November 2018 show the selective accumulation of drumsticks and wings. Total chicken in storage increased by 4.3 percent over the 12-month period. Leg quarters decreased by 38.6 percent consistent with ongoing exports. Wings increased by 31.6 percent suggesting "consumer fatigue" with the realization recognition that price per unit of edible chicken is higher for wings than for breast strips.

A comparison of USDA national retail prices indicates the downward trend in unit value comparing the last weeks` of 2017 and 2018. Bagged fryers decreased by 22.8 percent, breast tenders by 13.7 percent and wings by 7.8 percent. Only leg quarters on trays showed an increase in price attaining 7.8 percent during 2018.
